Much like last year with Charles Hinkle, Hebron Academy has another Division I prospect in Jordan Payton lingering around campus waiting for his opportunity to be discovered as the 2007-08 season comes to an end. Hinkle, after a long spring and summer of AAU tournaments and camps last year ended up signing with Vanderbilt. Athletic, focused, motivated, these are just a few words to describe Jordan Payton. Jordan is a native of San Diego, California and is enduring the cold Maine winter attending Hebron Academy for a Post Grad year. Payton is a 6’5’’ crafty floor-general that can make things happen and has a nice outside shooting touch and a 6’10’’ wingspan. Before arriving at Hebron, Jordan and his family relocated a few times during his high school career causing him to transfer to a couple different high schools while in California. And because he moved around a lot, the state ruled him ineligible to play his junior and senior year because of rules stating that a student cannot move to play sports at another school. Obviously frustrated, Jordan continued to workout hard, attend camps, and play in AAU tournaments. He was also invited to attend the Top 40 Junior’s All-West Camp Spring Showcase run by Fullcourt Press. Now at Hebron Academy, Jordan is working hard on the court, in the weight room, as well as in the classroom improving his academics. Payton was unable to play in the first 10 games of the season due to a wrist injury and played sparingly in his first couple of games back, but once he became 100% healthy and his game now in full swing he has put up some nice numbers dropping 24pts against Hyde and erupting for 38pts to lead Hebron past Brewster, 91-80. Clearly, not being eligible to play his junior and senior seasons in H.S. has effected his recruiting tremendously, however the talent is there to become a solid D-I player. The wrist injury to start this season was another setback to his recruiting however, this just sets things up for a kid like Jordan Payton to become one of those diamond in the ruff type players Division I programs are looking for. If Payton remains unsigned heading into the spring he plans on playing AAU basketball with Team Maine. Several schools have expressed interest and were just waiting for him to get back to full strength before attending some of his games. Now with game tape becoming available from recent games and Jordan at full strength, look for his recruiting to pick up as he finishes the remainder of Hebron’s schedule.
April 2006 - If your from Maine or New Hampshire and you want to make a name for yourself Team Maine Basketball Club will put you in the right places to make that happen. Just ask Logan Bouchard who simply blew up in a 10-day period in April with his play at the Reebok Jam Fest in Providence and in Washington D.C. at Charlie Weber. He displayed great quickness, ability to run a team, good court awareness, he showed he could split traps with his handles and also get to the rim, he knockdown jumpers, and played solid defense. Team Maine played tough, tall, quick teams from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Jersey, Tennessee and a couple teams from Yew York and most of our guys responded well to the high level of competition but Logan simply proved not only did he belong, but that he was a cut above and did it in front of a bunch of Division I coaches against nationally ranked kids. “My cell phone was ringing during and immediately after our games with D-I coaches asking about my guys, especially Logan. The first question from the coaches was who is this kid and where is he from?” Prior to playing with Team Maine these schools had no knowledge Logan even existed. Schools that have shown strong interest in Logan so far after his play in D.C. are Marist, Brown, Drexel, Virginia, Maine, Binghamton, Central Connecticut, Deleware, Northeastern, and James Madison. “Logan has only scratched the surface of his potential and his college recruitment. He is a dedicated player who knows how to play the game and has a great future ahead of him.” Bouchard will attend JUCO next fall.
Team Maine has Good Showings in Providence and in Washington D.C.
April 2006 - Team Maine Basketball Club had a successful start to their spring in Providence and D.C. with kids receiving looks from a variety of schools. Team Maine has played very well and has impressed a lot of scouting services, scouts, and college coaches. Team Maine is in its second season in Maine and has made an impact in a bunch of kids lives already. In 2007 Team Maine will most likely participate in the State AAU tournament for the first time but like this year there are other options that we feel are better for our kids to gain exposure and have better chances to earn scholarships. “My job is not to make sure we participate or qualify for the Maine State AAU tournament every year and go to Nationals, my job is to find a way to get all my kids scholarships!” When you travel and participate in the level of events we play in, know one really cares if you are the Maine State AAU Champs, winning that does nothing for your college recruitment. I would much rather our kids focus on lifting weights and working on their game in-between our major tournaments and get ready for our next event, the only championship in your high school career that means anything is the MPA High School State Championship. Through our schedule and program our kids will present their high school coach with a more skilled, physically stronger, battle tested, player in the fall when tryouts begin.” So far Team Maine has played well on the road against tough teams and the players have also played well individually. Martin Cleveland has been solid every game, he is very active and has shown great athleticism, on the defensive end he defends well and refuses to get dunked on and challenges every shot. He has stepped out and knocked down 15-foot jumpers and always attacks the rim. Martin has a few strong Division I and II looks and is looking to attend prep school this fall. Mehmet Sahan has played very well at times, the 6-8 Turkish kid from The Tilton School is getting some interest from several Division I schools. His game is very European and needs to add some toughness to his game down low, but he can step out and hit the 3, he runs the floor well, and has good court awareness. Another kid who has done his thing is Lee Suvlu the 6-4 Bangor High School shooting guard has knocked down some big shots from 3 and has made some athletic plays. His recruiting has picked up gaining early interest from some D-I and D-II schools. Joseph N’guany played well in both events and is focused on attending prep school next fall after a great season at Deering High School. Joe has shown nothing but heart when he plays and works hard on both ends of the court and college coaches have taken notice of his presence and will continue to monitor him. Shaine Burks has show improvement from a year ago and plays with hunger and passion on the court. He listens and runs the floor well. Shaine played well in both events and is learning a lot from the competition and his teammates on how to get his game to a higher level. If he can knock down his jumper consistently and continue to work hard in the weight room, he will be a player to watch out for in the class of 2008 again college coaches are taking early notice. Bennie Rhodes who will most likely be attending prep school in Maine or New Hampshire next fall joined the team in Washington D.C. and contributed right away. He dropped 29pts in his first game in a Team Maine uniform, but suffered from sore knees and legs as the tournament moved forward which made him unable to showcase his explosiveness, doctors say his condition is nothing alarming “it’s a simple case of a growth spurt.” Rhodes is being highly recruited by Arizona, Pepperdine, Gonzaga, West Virginia, Virginia, and Florida. Look for Bennie to be back with Team Maine soon. Andrew Duncanson has shot the ball nicely and has played tough defense. Dunc got to throw back-to-back lob passes for dunks in Providence to Cleveland and Bouchard and in D.C. he ran the team well against the Westchester Hawks. He has some interest from some colleges already and the list will continue to grow, as he stays focused. The big man Justin Powell showed off his nice touch hitting some key mid-range jumpers in pool play wins in Providence. Powell has a ton of potential and we look forward to helping him reach those goals as the spring and summer progresses. Can Ozkaner is another Turkish player in the class of 2007 from The Tilton School. Can is very fundamentally sound and can play a number of positions. Ozkaner can step out and shoot the 3 or he can match up with bigger players. He is a scholarship level kid with a good attitude and good work ethic
